“I am really excited about this match. I’m excited to host the Earthquakes here at Cardinale Stadium,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Sporting Director and Head Coach Frank Yallop. “We played two wonderful matches at their place last preseason and I really enjoyed their hospitality. I am excited for the fans to see an MLS team up close and personal. Because of my connection to the club, I really appreciate them coming down to play us. I’m looking forward to a competitive match and hosting a team that I’ve shared very fond memories with.”
A former head coach of the San Jose Earthquakes from 2001-2003, Yallop led the Earthquakes to two MLS Cup Championships in 2001 and 2003, and earned his first MLS Coach of the Year honor in 2001. His second such honors came in 2012, after he returned to San Jose for a second stint from 2008-13. Also in 2012, his San Jose side won the MLS Supporters Shield. Yallop entered the San Jose Earthquakes’ Hall of Fame this past April as first among all head coaches in club history in games coached with 257 and wins with 99. Last season, Yallop and Monterey Bay F.C. kicked off its inaugural campaign with two preseason friendlies against San Jose at PayPal Park.
“We are looking forward to hosting the San Jose Earthquakes to kick off our 2023 preseason,” said Mike DiGiulio, Monterey Bay F.C. President. “The Quakes are a successful, established MLS team, and it’s a great opportunity for both San Jose and Monterey Bay fans alike to gather and watch our two local teams. We are thrilled to host them at the beautiful Cardinale Stadium.”
In addition to Yallop’s connection to San Jose, Monterey Bay F.C. Assistant Coach Ramiro Corrales and midfielder Simon Dawkins also share connections to the Quakes as former players for the club. After signing with the Earthquakes at just 18 years old in 1996, Corrales went on to play 250 matches and over 20,000 minutes before becoming the ninth player to be inducted into the Earthquakes Hall of Fame in 2015. Dawkins spent a total of five seasons with San Jose. After originally joining the club for two seasons on loan from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2011, he signed permanently with the Quakes for three additional seasons from 2016-2018.
