Previous Matchups: The Union’s inaugural match as a club was a 4-2 defeat in Chandler, Arizona last Saturday against one of the favorites in the Western Conference this season, Phoenix Rising FC. In a statistically even match across the board, Phoenix jumped on top early and continued to opportunistically pile onto its lead throughout the first half to take a four-goal lead into the break. However, the second half was all Monterey Bay. The Union had Rising FC on its heels for much of the half and pulled two goals back while hitting the crossbar on another attempt, but fell short of completing the comeback.
In Colorado Springs’ season opener last weekend, Switchbacks FC hosted defending USL Championship Title Winners Orange County SC. After scoring the lone goal of the first half, the home side added an early second on the other side of the break to double its lead. Despite Orange County scoring late in the 82nd minute of the match, Switchbacks FC held on to earn the full three points.
Connections: Monterey Bay F.C. forward Christian Volesky spent the 2020 campaign with Colorado Springs and scored five goals in 1,166 minutes in 16 regular-season appearances for the Western Conference side. Switchbacks FC defender Matt Mahoney and Union goalkeeper Rafael Diaz spent the 2019-2020 campaigns as teammates. In addition, Mahoney spent the 2017 season alongside Monterey Bay F.C. forward Seku Conneh at Bethlehem Steel.
Notes: In the second of seven consecutive away matches to start the season, the Union are on the hunt for their first-ever result. Meanwhile, Switchbacks FC remains home for the second straight week to begin the campaign. Monterey Bay F.C. is 0-1-0 all-time on the road, while Colorado Springs is 50-29-26 all-time as hosts.
