Records: Monterey Bay F.C. (4-7-0, 12 points); Oakland Roots SC (3-4-7, 16 points)
Head-to-Head: Monterey Bay F.C. has the all-time advantage over Oakland Roots SC after winning its first match against the side in Oakland earlier in the campaign, the Union’s first-ever win in club history.
The previous match between the sides resulted in a 3-2 win for the Union at Laney College Stadium on March 26. Monterey Bay midfielder Chase Boone opened the scoring in the 8th minute of the match to give the Union its first lead in club history, but it was short lived. The Roots scored back-to-back in the 39th and 49th to retake the lead before Boone scored again to level the match in the 68th minute and record a new first for the club, the first individual multi-goal game in club history. In the final seconds of regular time, defender Hugh Roberts hammered home the game-winning header to bring the score to 3-2, the match’s final lead change. The victory capped off a night of firsts for Monterey Bay, with the Crisp and Kelp earning the first win in the club’s history.
Connections: Monterey Bay F.C. defender Kai Greene spent the 2021 season in Oakland with Roots SC for its inaugural campaign in the USL Championship. Greene started 24 of his 28 total appearances and scored one goal, while helping the club reach the conference semifinals before making the move to Monterey Bay this offseason.
Notes: While it will be the second all-time regular season meeting with the Roots, it will be the first meeting between the sides at Cardinale Stadium. Monterey Bay F.C. is 2-1-0 all-time at home, while Oakland Roots SC is 4-10-8 all-time on the road.
