Monterey Bay F.C. Earns a Point on the Road Against Rio Grande Valley FC
EDINBURG, Texas (Friday, March 24, 2023) – Monterey Bay F.C. (1-1-1, 4 points) left with a 1-1 draw against Rio Grande Valley FC (0-0-3, 3 points) at H-E-B Park. Alex Dixon scored the lone goal for the Crisp and Kelp on a Chase Boone assist in the second half.
The Toros saw their first good chance of the match after earning a free kick in the 8th minute of the match and looked to punch it in, but the goal was called back for offside. A minute later, Monterey Bay’s Christian Volesky found the back of the net, but his goal was also called back for the same violation. Walmer Martínez got beyond the Rio Grande Valley FC back line in the 40th minute, but his shot across the frame missed wide of the left post and the sides went scoreless into the halftime break.
In the 63rd minute, Monterey Bay F.C. forward Chase Boone sprung the counter and found Alex Dixon making a run beyond the Toros back line. Dixon then rounded the goalkeeper and slid the ball across the line and into the open net to break open the match and give the Crisp and Kelp the 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, Mobi Fehr was given a second yellow card and was dismissed, leaving the Union with 10 men for the final 19 minutes of the match. Rio Grande Valley FC began to push for their first goal of the match and saw several opportunities thwarted by Antony Siaha and the Union defense. Then just a minute into stoppage time, the Toros found the equalizer on a strike from Taylor Davila. During the celebration, RGV’s Erik Pimentel was shown a straight red that brought the hosts to 10 men for the final four minutes of added time. Monterey Bay F.C. looked to retake the lead with one final chance in the 90+3 minute when second-half substitute Jason Johnson looked to squeeze a ball beyond the hosts back line, but the ball was intercepted by a Toros defender and the match ended level at 1-1.
