Sporting Director & Head Coach Frank Yallop
On the match:
“I think San Diego played well tonight, you’ve got to hand it to them. We just weren’t on our game on the break and really just in general. Having said that, Sam [Gleadle] scored a great goal on the break, Alex Lara scores another goal on a set play, so I’m thinking, you know, we haven’t played well and we’re doing okay. Sometimes you’ve got to win ugly. If we could’ve tied the game it obviously would have been a lot better for us. But you’ve got to hand it to them, they kept going and they got their two goals. Tough night, the guys are disappointed. But we’re going to dust ourselves off and get ready for the weekend, which is a big game now.”
On the setback despite playing well overall:
“We just have to keep going. We probably had a few games out of the last five or so where we maybe could’ve tied. So maybe it’s a bit of evening up the games. We’d won four in a row so it would’ve been nice to get a tie tonight. But maybe in the other games we didn’t quite deserve to get wins and we did. But again, it changes quickly. If you see the game it changed from one minute us missing a really good chance to them going down on the other end scoring and then getting a winner. That’s football, it’s a crazy sport. You can win it quickly and you can lose it quickly. Again, we are really disappointed with tonight but we’ve got to get ourselves going and get ready for the next game.”
Forward Sam Gleadle
On the team’s form coming into the match:
“We just came together as a group and said, ‘guys, this isn’t good enough.’ The effort was there for the most part, but we just had to tweak some things and get back to the basics. We’ve done really well with that. Today was a good performance, but if we don’t do it for the full 90, especially against a team like that, you get punished. We have to reflect on this quickly and then we have another game Saturday.”
On the quick turnaround ahead:
“Another good team on the road, but it’s just about recovery – get your body right. We have to get back on track now with a result. So just recover, watch some film, tweak tactics, see what we have to do against them on Saturday and regroup.”
On his goal celebration:
“That was for my little man. My wife and I just had a baby and this was his third home game now. He was asleep, so he didn’t get to see it, but one day he’ll see it. I’ve been waiting to score in front of him, and to do it at home as well was really special. I’ve heard there’s a dip in performance after becoming a parent because of the lack of sleep but I think I’ve done pretty well. I’ve got a great group of guys here who are fathers as well who are showing me the reins a little bit, so I’m just trying to learn from them and help the team the best I can.”
