Morey Doner Becomes First-Ever Monterey Bay F.C. Ironman
SEASIDE, Calif. (Thursday, October 19, 2023) – With the 2023 USL Championship regular season coming to a close last weekend, Monterey Bay F.C. defender Morey Doner officially became the Club’s first-ever ironman for playing all 3,060 minutes of the 34 match campaign. Doner also played all 330 minutes of the Crisp-and-Kelp’s U.S. Open Cup run in 2023, bringing his total to 3,390 minutes across 37 matches in all competitions.
Doner has played all but 13 minutes in two years with the Union for a total of 6,107 out of a possible 6,120 – minutes he only missed when he was subbed out of a match in the middle of the Club’s inaugural season in 2022. During his ironman campaign this past season, the Canadian international recorded 37 tackles, 34 clearances, 28 interceptions, and nine blocks. Doner added two goals and two assists with 30 chances created in attack, and led the team in fouls won with 72, almost double the next closest player.
“It’s always really important for me to be available for the team and I feel like I have been able to do that in my career so far,” said Doner. “To have the belief of my coach and my teammates as well is something that I’ve always wanted in my career and ever since I’ve been here I’ve felt at home. To play every minute and to be healthy, it means the world to me. Obviously it was a disappointing season collectively, but for me to have that accolade is a silver lining for me personally. I’ve always been very motivated to do the extra things off the field. Taking care of my body in the ways that I know how is important for keeping me going on the field and allows me to always give 100%.”
In addition, defender Kai Greene came 14 minutes short of joining Doner as an ironman this season after also starting in all 34 of Monterey Bay’s matches throughout the Club’s sophomore campaign in USL Championship. The dependable defensive duo helped the Crisp-and-Kelp secure seven clean sheets on the year and will look to do it again in 2024.
