Head Coach Jordan Stewart
On the result:
“It was a bit upsetting, it wasn’t our best game. Coming off of a defeat in New Mexico, we wanted to put our onus on the game and I thought we started well. We were good in the press and forced them to go long, but the result – after the chances we created – was a bit disappointing.”
On the positives the team can take into Rhode Island next weekend:
“Our home performances have been good as far as not losing. We seem to be a team that can create a lot of chances both at home and on the road, so that’s a positive. We have guys that come in and help with the game, like today with Luther [Archimède] helping press. He created problems for them in their build. On top of that, even though we are creating, we still need to finish. We can’t just rely on our defenders to keep clean sheets. As a staff we’re big advocates of trying to keep clean sheets because we know it can help win games, but you don’t want to keep the pressure on the defensive unit and that starts at the front all the way to the back. In today’s game, towards the end Miami had nothing to lose so they threw the kitchen sink and were able to get a goal from us switching off on a set piece. So while we seem to do well at home, it was disappointing tonight. As we progress through the season we need to be better in those moments.”
Defender Nico Gordon
On the match:
“I thought we started the match very well, we created a lot of chances, but unfortunately we couldn’t take them. Towards the end of the first half Nico [Campuzano] pulled off a great save that kept us in the game and then going into the locker room the gaffer told us to just keep rotating the ball, keep making them tired and the chances will come and more chances came in the second half but unfortunately again we couldn’t take them. Then we let a set piece in and obviously the game changed. It’s a game that we should have won but we didn’t take our chances so we’re not leaving with three points. On the good side, it was a better performance than last week when we lost against New Mexico. We just need to fix a few things, lock onto Rhode Island, and get the three points there.”
On what the team needs to fix ahead of next weekend:
“We just need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Throughout the game we’re defending very well as a team. We want to be a pressing team and we’re pressing a lot better. It’s that final ball and that final finish that we didn’t have today. We just need to make sure that when we get the chance we kill the team so that we can play more comfortably on the ball.”
