Match Recap: Monterey Bay FC Falls 1-0 at Charleston Battery
CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Saturday, September 19, 2026) – Monterey Bay FC fell 1-0 to Charleston Battery on Saturday night at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium, with a late goal from Camilo Sánchez separating the two sides.
The Crisp-and-Kelp entered the match looking to return to the win column following a 1-1 draw against Phoenix Rising FC in their previous outing. Monterey Bay started the night with a disciplined defensive effort, limiting Charleston’s chances and keeping the hosts off the scoreboard through the opening 45 minutes.
Charleston created opportunities early, but Jacob Jackson and the Monterey Bay defense stood firm. Jackson denied Sebastián Lletget from a free kick in the 26th minute, while Charleston’s Miguel Berry also tested the Monterey Bay goalkeeper shortly before halftime. Neither side was able to find the breakthrough, sending the match into the interval scoreless.
Monterey Bay came out on the front foot after halftime and generated some of its best chances of the evening. Omari Glasgow forced a save from Charleston goalkeeper Daniel Kuzemka in the 52nd minute before Lletget tested the Battery goalkeeper again four minutes later. Kuzemka made saves on both attempts to keep the match level.
The Crisp-and-Kelp continued to battle as the match entered its final stages, but Charleston eventually found the decisive moment in the 78th minute. Following a corner kick from Jeremy Kelly, Sánchez found space inside the six-yard box and redirected the delivery into the net to give the Battery a 1-0 lead.
Monterey Bay pushed forward in search of an equalizer, making a series of late substitutions as the Crisp-and-Kelp continued to compete until the final whistle. Charleston, however, held on to secure all three points.
Despite the result, Monterey Bay’s defensive effort kept the match within reach throughout the night. The Crisp-and-Kelp will now turn their attention toward their next challenge as the regular season continues into its final stretch.
Monterey Bay will return home to Cardinale Stadium on September 26 to host Lexington SC.
