Republic FC earned the first opportunity of the match in the 5th minute. Following a cross into the box, Keko fired a shot from six yards out, but goalkeeper Antony Siaha thwarted the chance with his outstretched left hand on an incredible diving save to his left. Three minutes later, the Union earned their first attacking opportunity of the match. Simon Dawkins weaved past the defense, but his shot missed beyond the left post. In the 14th minute of the match, Morey Doner drew a foul deep into the opponents’ half of the pitch. James Murphy whipped the ensuing free kick from the right side into the box and Volesky rose up to hammer the ball into the back of the net with a header to give the Crisp and Kelp the 1-0 lead. The Union attacked again six minutes later, but Volesky’s cross into the box was covered up by the goalkeeper. With four minutes to play in the first half, Monterey Bay F.C. earned a corner, but the opportunity was cleared away by the visitors’ defense and the Union entered the halftime break with the lead.
Nearing the end of a back and forth second half, Doner crossed a ball into the box in the 75th minute that landed at the feet of Dawkins, but he could not get enough power on it and his shot was saved at the center of the box by the goalkeeper. In the 82nd minute, second-half substitute Jason Johnson received a ball over the top on a run deep down the left sideline, but his shot from the left side of the box was blocked out for a throw-in. Despite the visitors pushing desperately for the equalizer, the Union defense held strong once again to secure the club’s fourth consecutive clean sheet at Cardinale Stadium.
