Monterey Bay F.C. Wraps Home Preseason Schedule Against Oakland Roots SC

Crisp and Kelp to Finish Preseason with Match in Sacramento on March 4

SEASIDE, California (Saturday, February 25, 2023) – Monterey Bay F.C. fell 1-0 to the Oakland Roots SC in the final preseason match of 2023 at Cardinale Stadium.

10 minutes into the match the Union came close to scoring the opener when Sam Gleadle got free beyond the visitors’ back line forcing the Roots goalkeeper to rush off of his line, but Gleadle’s chip over the goalkeeper missed just over the top of the crossbar. Oakland turned the ball over to Gleadle in a dangerous position in the 19th minute. Gleadle laid the ball off for Alex Dixon inside the box, but his right-footed shot missed to the outside. Oakland found the opening goal in the 30th minute of the match with a follow up tap-in after a spill by the Union inside the six yard box. Oakland looked to double its lead in the 36th minute, but a curling shot aimed at the top right corner was saved by Antony Siaha in a diving effort and the Union entered the break down 1-0.

Walmer Martínez crossed a dangerous ball into the box towards Gleadle in the 56th minute, but his flicked-on header fell harmlessly at the far post. Jason Johnson fired a shot from the top of the box in the 69th minute of the match, but it veered just outside of the left post. Oakland came close again to a second goal in the 82nd minute, but the shot from just outside the six was skied over the bar. Johnson stole possession from the Roots just outside Oakland’s box and found himself alone with a look on frame, but his shot was punched away by the goalkeeper and the match ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
