Monterey Bay Gears Up for Eastern Conference Fixture with Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium
HAMTRAMCK, Michigan (Friday, July 21, 2023) – Monterey Bay F.C. (7-7-6, 27 points) travels to Michigan for an important 4:30 p.m. PT kickoff on Saturday against Detroit City FC (5-11-5, 20 points) at Keyworth Stadium in Week 20 of the 2023 USL Championship regular season. Live streaming of the match will be available on ESPN+.
Monterey Bay and fellow 2022 expansion side Detroit City FC had just a single meeting last season. It took place in Seaside at Cardinale Stadium on July 16, 2022 and ended in a scoreless draw, giving Antony Siaha his second clean sheet in just his second-ever professional match. The matchup now moves to Detroit City FC’s Keyworth Stadium for the second meeting, with both clubs needing a positive result in a bad way. Even with a midweek win over Louisville City FC, Detroit City FC still finds itself below the playoff line. Currently sitting uncomfortably in seventh place in the Western Conference table after dropping three of their four matches in the month of July thus far, the Crisp-and-Kelp also need three points to maintain sole control of their place above the playoff line. Outside of a win, the side would need at least a point to have the best chance at remaining above the line when the dust settles on the weekend.
Two Monterey Bay players are expected to hit incredible career milestones in the match. Currently with 19,977 minutes played in his career, Hugh Roberts II is expected to become just the third player in league history to reach 20,000 career minutes as he only needs 23 more to reach the milestone. The current all-time leader in minutes played is Taylor Mueller with 20,077, followed by Indy Eleven’s Aodhan Quinn, who just became the second to ever reach the milestone himself last week and now sits at 20,006. With a full match played on Saturday, Roberts II could come within 10 minutes of tying Mueller’s current record for all-time minutes played. He would then be just 11 minutes away from becoming the number two all-time minutes leader in league history behind Quinn, who is expected to remain ahead barring any missed time.
Christian Volesky is also expected to cross a major career milestone as his next appearance will be the 200th of his career. Volesky will be the 27th player in USL Championship history to reach 200 appearances, with the all-time leader being currently-active Yann Ekra of the Tampa Bay Rowdies who enters the weekend at 263 appearances. Volesky also enters the match just one goal away from 60 for his career.
